Dewitt Clinton RUMSEY (RIN: 0350), son of James Barlow RUMSEY and Mary DALZELL , was born 04 March 1831 in Piqua, Ohio. He married Katherine Chase ROBERTS 12 August 1873 in Santa Clara, Santa Clara County, California. He died 1913 in Sebastopol, California. Katherine Chase ROBERTS (RIN: 0361) was born November 1845.

Dewitt Rumsey left Miami County, Ohio for California in 1852 working his passage by driving sheep across the plains. He engaged in gold mining around Placerville for about a year and then moved to San Jose, California. After four years in San Jose, he moved to Solano County where he served three years in a company of light dragoons, commencing as orderly sergeant in 1862 and filling successively every office until he became Captain. In 1870 Captain Rumsey settled on land at the head of Capay Valley and was instrumental in laying out the town of Rumsey, named in his honor.
